1. On December 11, 1805, the Treaty of Fort Industry was signed between representatives of the Wyandot, Delaware, Shawnee, and Seneca tribes and the United States government. The treaty ceded large portions of land in Ohio to the U.S. in exchange for a reservation and annual payments.
2. The Cleveland Museum of Art officially opened on December 11, 1916. The museum is known for its extensive collection of art from around the world, ranging from ancient artifacts to contemporary works.
3. The Ohio State Buckeyes football team won their first national championship on December 11, 1942, with a victory over the University of Missouri in the Sugar Bowl. This was the second of seven national championships for the Buckeyes.
4. The Ohio Board of Education voted to require daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools on December 11, 1950. This policy remains in effect today.
5. NASA astronaut, John Glenn, became the first American to orbit the Earth on December 11, 1962, aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft. Glenn, a native of Ohio, later served as a U.S. senator for 24 years.
