1. In 1944, a massive fire erupted in the city of Hartford, Florida, destroying most of the homes and businesses in the area. The fire was so intense that firefighters from as far away as Miami were called in to help put it out.

2. On December 13, 1988, the Florida House of Representatives voted unanimously to impeach Governor Claude Kirk on charges of bribery and corruption. Kirk became the first governor in Florida history to be impeached.

3. In 2003, the Florida Marlins signed free agent pitcher Carl Pavano to a four-year contract worth $39.95 million. Pavano went on to have a mediocre tenure with the Marlins, but he did help them win the World Series in 2003.

4. December 13, 1972, was a significant day in the history of the Florida Highway Patrol. On that day, the agency's very first female trooper, Loretta McCain, graduated from the FHP Academy.

5. In 1942, the U.S. Navy established a new naval air station in Jacksonville, Florida, which would go on to become one of the largest naval air stations in the world. Today, the station is known as Naval Air Station Jacksonville and is home to more than 20,000 military and civilian personnel.
