1. In 1847, the Iowa State Capitol building was destroyed by fire. It was later rebuilt and completed in 1886.

2. On December 13, 1958, the first Hy-Vee grocery store opened in Beaconsfield, Iowa. Today, Hy-Vee is a popular chain of supermarkets throughout the Midwest.

3. In 1971, the Iowa State football team won its first bowl game, defeating Tennessee in the Sun Bowl. The victory helped to establish Iowa State as a competitive football program.

4. On December 13, 1985, actor and Iowa native Tom Arnold married comedian Roseanne Barr in a ceremony in Des Moines. The couple later divorced, but both went on to achieve success in their respective careers.

5. In 1999, a storm system called the "Ice Storm of the Century" hit Iowa, causing widespread power outages and dangerous travel conditions. The storm caused millions of dollars in damage and resulted in several deaths.
