In 1855, a protest over Maine's newly-enforced prohibition laws escalated into the Portland Rum Riot. The protesters clashed with authorities and ransacked a local police station, resulting in several deaths and arrests.

3. Maine Ratifies the 19th Amendment.
On December 13th, 1919, Maine became one of the first states to ratify the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote. The amendment was officially added to the US Constitution the following year.

4. The Sinking of the USS Eagle PE-56.
During World War II, the USS Eagle PE-56 was sunk by a German U-boat off the coast of Maine on December 13th, 1944. Only 13 of the 62 crew members survived the attack.

5. Birth of Margaret Chase Smith.
On December 13th, 1897, Margaret Chase Smith was born in Skowhegan, Maine. She would go on to become the first woman to serve in both the US House of Representatives and the Senate, and was known for her vocal opposition to Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-communist witch hunts in the 1950s.
