1. On December 13, 1838, the Treaty of St. Peters was signed between the United States government and the Ojibwe people, ceding territory in what is now Minnesota to the U.S. government. The treaty ultimately led to the forced removal of the Ojibwe people from their ancestral lands.

2. In 1865, the University of Minnesota was established. Originally called the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis, the school became the flagship campus of the University of Minnesota system.

3. On December 13, 1937, the city of New Ulm experienced a devastating fire that destroyed much of its downtown area. The fire began in a local department store and quickly spread through the surrounding buildings, resulting in millions of dollars in damages.

4. In 1952, Minnesota Governor Adlai Stevenson announced his candidacy for President of the United States in the 1952 Democratic primaries. Despite being a popular candidate, Stevenson ultimately lost the nomination to Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson.

5. On December 13, 2012, the Minnesota Vikings announced plans to build a new stadium in downtown Minneapolis. The state-of-the-art U.S. Bank Stadium opened in 2016 and serves as the home stadium for the Minnesota Vikings NFL team.
