3. In 1912, the city of Beatrice experienced a devastating tornado that killed nine people and caused widespread damage. The tornado had winds of over 200 miles per hour and destroyed over 70 homes in the area.

4. In 1943, the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team won their first-ever national championship, finishing the season with a perfect 8-0 record. The team was coached by Glen Presnell and featured future Hall of Famer Bob Devaney as a player.

5. In 1985, Nebraska Governor Kay Orr became the first woman in the United States to be elected governor without having previously succeeded her husband in the position. Orr served as governor from 1987 to 1991 and was known for her conservative policies and focus on fiscal responsibility.
