1) On December 16, 1907, the Jordan School District in Utah was formed, named after the Jordan River. It originally served the southwestern part of Salt Lake County, but has since expanded to include parts of western and southern Salt Lake County, as well as a portion of northern Utah County.
2) In 1916, the Utah State Capitol building was completed on December 16th, more than 20 years after the cornerstone was laid. The building is known for its neoclassical architecture and hosts the offices of the Governor of Utah and other state government officials.
3) December 16, 1950 saw the opening of Alta Ski Area, which became Utah's first ski resort. Located in Little Cottonwood Canyon, the area is known for its challenging terrain and powder snow.
4) On December 16, 2006, the American Fork Canyon in Utah was closed to motorized vehicles due to winter weather and a high avalanche danger. This closure affected snowmobile riders and other recreational users of the canyon.
5) In 2014, a rare winter storm hit Utah on December 16th, causing multiple car accidents and road closures. The storm dropped several inches of snow across the state and brought record low temperatures to some areas.
