1. In 1823, the first white settlement was established in what is now Milwaukee by French-Canadian fur trader Jacques Vieau.

2. In 1837, the University of Wisconsin was founded in Madison. It was originally known as the "University of the Territory of Wisconsin" and was the first public university in the state.

3. In 1846, Wisconsin was admitted as the 30th state in the United States, becoming the first state west of the Mississippi River to be admitted.

4. In 1917, the first state income tax in the United States was introduced in Wisconsin. The tax was initially imposed to help fund World War I.

5. In 1974, the first section of Wisconsin's Interstate Highway System was opened to traffic. The section, known as I-94, runs from Milwaukee to the Illinois state line.
