1. On December 21, 1820, the state of New Hampshire ratified the United States Constitution. This came after a lengthy dispute with neighboring Vermont over their respective borders. New Hampshire ultimately gave up its claim to land that now belongs to Vermont in exchange for its representation in Congress.
2. In 1872, the town of Hanover, New Hampshire officially became home to Dartmouth College. Originally founded in 1769, the college had previously been located in nearby Eleazar Wheelock's Log College.
3. On December 21, 1935, a devastating fire destroyed the Grand Hotel in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Despite the efforts of the local fire department, the historic hotel was completely destroyed. Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze.
4. In 1982, the first-ever NHL game was held at the newly-built Sullivan Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire. The game was between the Hartford Whalers and the Montreal Canadiens, with the Whalers winning 4-3 in overtime.
5. On December 21, 1991, the state of New Hampshire celebrated its 200th anniversary. Festivities included parades, speeches, and other commemorative events held throughout the state.
