1. In 1799, Virginia's Governor, James Monroe, signed the "Act for Establishing Religious Freedom" which guaranteed freedom of religion and was a groundbreaking piece of legislation that served as a model for the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
2. On December 22, 1862, the Battle of Fredericksburg ended in a Confederate victory, considered one of the most lopsided defeats in American history. The battle resulted in nearly 13,000 Union casualties and over 5,000 Confederate casualties.
3. In 1913, Virginia became the first state in the South to create a statewide agency for highway construction. Today, the Virginia Department of Transportation oversees more than 58,000 miles of roads in the state.
4. On December 22, 1963, the first Domino's Pizza restaurant opened in Ypsilanti, Michigan, by Tom Monaghan and his brother James. Monaghan was raised in an orphanage in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and briefly attended the University of Michigan before starting the pizza chain.
5. In 1992, Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia played in the first meeting of the "Commonwealth Cup" in football. The rivalry, one of the oldest and most heated in the ACC, is played annually and alternates between Blacksburg and Charlottesville. The Hokies currently hold the bragging rights after winning the past 16 meetings.
