1. In 1823, the Michigan Territorial Council passed a resolution to establish the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. This became the first publicly funded university in the United States and has since become one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

2. In 1842, the Detroit Public Library was founded. This was one of the first free public libraries in the United States and it now houses over 7 million volumes.

3. In 1913, the Ford Motor Company introduced the moving assembly line for the production of automobiles at its factory in Highland Park. This innovation enabled Ford to produce cars at a much faster pace and significantly reduced costs, leading to the mass production of automobiles and the rise of the American car industry.

4. In 1938, the Michigan State Police began using a new system for identifying fingerprints in criminal investigations. This system, known as the "Michigan system," was the first automated fingerprint identification system in the world.

5. In 1970, the Chrysler Corporation announced that it would be building a new automobile assembly plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan. This plant would go on to produce some of the most popular cars in American history, including the Dodge Caravan and the Chrysler Town & Country.
