1. The 27th of December, 1934, marked the first time North Dakota experienced a recorded temperature of -60°F (-51°C) at Parshall, making it the coldest day in North Dakota history.
2. On December 27, 1947, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) approved the construction of an aeronautics research facility in Fargo, North Dakota. This would eventually become the Flight Dynamics Laboratory and Engineering Research Center of the Air Force Research Laboratory.
3. In 1967, a brutal blizzard known as the "Mina Lake Blizzard" hit North Dakota, claiming five lives and causing millions of dollars in damage. The storm's effects were felt strongly on December 27th, when ice storms and snow drifts caused power outages and stranded thousands of North Dakotans on the roads.
4. On December 27, 1972, the first female United States Senator from North Dakota, Jocelyn Burdick, took office after being appointed by Governor Arthur Link to replace her husband, Quentin Burdick, who had died in office. She served until January 3, 1993.
5. In 2016, December 27th marked the beginning of a winter storm that would hit North Dakota with heavy snow and gusty winds, causing whiteout conditions and leading to multiple accidents on the roads. The storm continued into December 28th, with some areas receiving up to 12 inches of snow.
