1. In 1862, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan led a daring raid into Kentucky. His forces captured and destroyed the Union garrison at Munfordville, then continued on to Bardstown, Springfield, and Elizabethtown before escaping back to Tennessee. This raid was part of Morgan's campaign to disrupt Union supply lines and divert attention away from Confederate forces in Tennessee.

2. On December 28, 1877, Kentucky Governor James B. McCreary signed a bill creating the Kentucky Geological Survey. This agency was tasked with mapping and studying the state's mineral resources, as well as investigating geological hazards such as landslides and sinkholes.

3. In 1934, the first edition of the Paducah Sun-Democrat was published. This newspaper served the western Kentucky region and was later renamed the Paducah Sun. It continues to publish to this day.

4. On December 28, 1967, the Kentucky Colonels professional basketball team played their first game at the Louisville Convention Center. The Colonels were a founding member of the American Basketball Association and played in the league from 1967-1976. Notable players during this time included Dan Issel, Artis Gilmore, and Louie Dampier.

5. In 2007, Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher announced that the state would receive over $10 million in federal funding to support energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. This funding was part of a nationwide program designed to reduce dependence on foreign oil and promote clean energy solutions. Projects supported by this funding included the installation of solar panels on public buildings and the retrofitting of older buildings to be more energy-efficient.
