1. On December 29, 1778, the British captured Savannah, Georgia during the American Revolutionary War. Many Maryland soldiers fought in this battle on the side of the Patriots, including General John Cadwalader.
2. In 1845, Annapolis, Maryland became the capital of the United States for one day. This was due to a constitutional requirement that the new president, James K. Polk, be inaugurated on March 4th, which that year fell on a Sunday. By law, Polk could not be inaugurated on a Sunday, so the ceremony was held in Annapolis on December 29th, and then again in Washington, D.C. on March 5th.
3. A major snowstorm hit Maryland on December 29, 1909, dumping over a foot of snow in some areas. The storm caused widespread transportation disruptions and power outages, and many businesses and schools had to close.
4. In 1953, Baltimore Orioles first baseman George "Doc" Miller died of a heart attack while hunting in Maryland. Miller played for the Orioles for five seasons, from 1909 to 1914, and was known for his excellent defensive skills.
