1. Idaho Statehood Day
December 3rd is Idaho Statehood Day, commemorating the day in 1890 when Idaho became the 43rd state to join the Union.
2. The Camas Prairie Railroad
On December 3, 1897, the Camas Prairie Railroad was completed, linking the towns of Grangeville and Lewiston. This new railroad was instrumental in the development and growth of the region, making transportation of goods and people much easier.
3. Formation of Idaho Power Company
On December 3, 1915, the Idaho Power Company was formed to provide hydroelectric power to the growing cities and towns of Idaho. Today, Idaho Power is one of the top 10 largest electric utilities in the western United States.
4. The Great Snow of 1949
On December 3, 1949, the Great Snow of 1949 began in Idaho. This massive winter storm dumped over 100 inches of snow in some areas, causing widespread damage and disruption. It is still remembered as one of the worst winter storms in Idaho's history.
5. Marshall Taylor becomes first African American world champion
On December 3, 1899, Marshall "Major" Taylor became the first African American world champion in cycling. Born in Indianapolis, Taylor competed in races around the world, including multiple victories in Idaho before retiring in 1910. His legacy as a pioneering athlete and civil rights advocate continues to inspire people today.
