1. The Battle of Ivy Mountain
On December 4, 1864, the Battle of Ivy Mountain took place in Eastern Kentucky during the American Civil War. Union General Burbridge and his men successfully defeated the Confederate General Vaughan and his troops.

2. Kentucky's State Flag
On December 4, 1918, Kentucky adopted its official state flag, featuring the state's seal in a navy blue field with the words "Commonwealth of Kentucky" surrounding it. The flag was designed by Jesse Cox Burgess, an art teacher at Western Kentucky University.

3. Gov. Martha Layne Collins

On December 4, 1900, a devastating fire in the small town of Gravel Switch, Kentucky destroyed several buildings including the post office, hotel, and general store. The fire started in the hotel and quickly spread due to the strong winds that night.
