1. Oklahoma Becomes a State - On December 8, 1907, Oklahoma officially became the 46th state of the United States. The state's admission followed the Oklahoma Organic Act of 1890, which paved the way for the eventual creation of the state.
2. USS Oklahoma Remembered - December 8 also marks the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The USS Oklahoma was one of the ships that was attacked, and 429 crew members lost their lives. In 2007, a memorial to the USS Oklahoma and its crew was dedicated in Oklahoma City.
3. Will Rogers Born - Will Rogers, one of the most famous Oklahomans in history, was born on December 8, 1879, in what is now Oologah, Oklahoma. Rogers was a vaudeville performer, actor, and writer, and he is remembered for his humorous and homespun commentaries on the events of his time.
4. Oklahoma City Bombing - On April 19, 1995, a bomb exploded outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people and injuring more than 680 others. The bombing was one of the deadliest acts of domestic terrorism in American history. December 8 marks the day that the last survivor was rescued from the rubble of the building.
5. Cherokee Nation Government Restored - On December 8, 1999, the Cherokee Nation, one of Oklahoma's largest Native American tribes, had its tribal government restored after a 110-year hiatus. The restoration followed a court ruling that recognized the Cherokee Nation's right to self-governance and autonomy.
