3. In 1942, during World War II, Japanese internment began in Hawaii. Over 2,000 Japanese-American residents of the islands were arrested and sent to mainland internment camps.
4. In 1968, the first Polynesian Voyaging Society canoe, the Hōkūleʻa, was launched in Honolulu. It was built to replicate ancient Polynesian voyaging canoes and has traveled around the world using traditional navigation techniques.
5. In 2014, the first same-sex couples were married in Hawaii. Following a court ruling earlier that year, same-sex marriage became legal in the state on December 2, 2013.
