1. In 1929, Nevada became the first state to legalize gambling. This would eventually lead to the establishment of the famous Las Vegas Strip, which is now a major tourist destination.
2. On February 11, 1937, the Hoover Dam was officially dedicated. The massive structure spans the border between Nevada and Arizona and provides hydroelectric power that is used throughout the Southwest.
3. In 1960, the U.S. Navy conducted the first successful launch of a Polaris missile from a submerged submarine. The USS George Washington (SSBN-598) took part in the exercise off the coast of California. The Polaris missile would eventually become a key component of the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
4. On February 11, 1978, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) men's basketball team beat the University of Utah 101-78 in a game at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It was the Runnin' Rebels' 19th straight win and helped to establish them as a dominant force in college basketball.
5. In 2010, the Nevada State Museum in Carson City opened a new exhibit called "Under One Sky: Nevada's Native American Heritage." The exhibit showcases the art, culture, and history of the state's various Native American tribes, and includes artifacts such as pottery, baskets, and clothing.
