1. On February 11, 1801, Spanish explorer Francisco Atanasio Domínguez and Fray Francisco Silvestre Vélez de Escalante made the first recorded visit by non-Native Americans to the Hopi Indian pueblo of Oraibi. This event marked an important milestone in the exploration of the American Southwest.

2. In 1855, the territorial legislature of New Mexico created the University of New Mexico, which was the first public institution of higher education in the state. The university has since grown to become one of the largest and most respected research universities in the nation.

3. On February 11, 1908, New Mexico became the first territory in the United States to grant women the right to vote. This landmark decision paved the way for the eventual passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women across the nation the right to vote in national elections.

4. In 1937, the infamous "Bataan Death March" began in the Philippines. The march involved the forced relocation of tens of thousands of U.S. and Filipino prisoners of war by Japanese forces during World War II. Many of the prisoners died as a result of the brutal conditions they were subjected to during the march.

5. Finally, on February 11, 1960, the town of Taos was designated a National Historic Landmark. The town is home to many examples of traditional adobe architecture, as well as a thriving artist community. Today, Taos is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state, drawing visitors from all over the world.
