1. In 1867, the North Dakota Constitutional Convention was held in Bismarck to draft a constitution for the territory. This constitution was later adopted in 1889 when North Dakota became a state.
2. In 1904, the French opera singer Marcella Sembrich performed in Fargo. She was one of the most popular sopranos of her time and had even performed for Queen Victoria.
3. In 1929, a blizzard swept across North Dakota, causing widespread damage and loss of life. The storm was particularly devastating in the western part of the state where snow drifts reached up to 30 feet high.
4. In 1955, the North Dakota legislature officially adopted the state song “North Dakota Hymn” which was written by James W. Foley. The song has been performed at official state events ever since.
5. In 1972, the North Dakota Fighting Sioux men’s basketball team defeated Portland State in a thrilling triple-overtime game. The win improved their record to 18-1 and helped them go on to win the conference championship.
