1. In 1785, the town of Norway was incorporated in Maine. This town was named after its original settlers who came from Norway, a country in Northern Europe.
2. On February 13, 1901, the first interstate automobile race in the United States was held in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. The race was organized by the Automobile Club of America and was a 50-mile sprint.
3. In 1945, during World War II, a US Navy bomber plane crashed into a mountain in Maine killing all 10 people on board. The wreckage of the plane was not found until 2005 by a group of hikers.
4. On February 13, 1981, Maine's first snowmobile museum was opened in Mechanic Falls. The museum showcased the history and evolution of snowmobiling in Maine from its early beginnings to modern-day machines.
5. In 2017, a rare white lobster was caught off the coast of Maine on February 13. The lobster, named "Lucky," was donated to the Maine State Aquarium and became an instant local celebrity. White lobsters are extremely rare and occur only in about one out of every 100 million lobsters.
