1. In 1821, the Treaty of Córdoba was signed, officially ending the Mexican War of Independence from Spain and establishing Mexico as an independent nation. New Mexico would remain part of Mexico until the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848.
2. On February 13, 1855, the US Army established Fort Craig in present-day Socorro County. The fort played a key role in the Civil War as well as the Indian Wars of the late 1800s.
3. In 1862, Confederate troops under General Henry Hopkins Sibley marched into New Mexico as part of an ultimately unsuccessful campaign to push Union forces out of the territory. On February 13, Confederate forces captured Fort Craig but were forced to abandon it shortly thereafter due to lack of supplies.
4. On February 13, 1935, the city of Albuquerque celebrated its first annual National Air Mail Week with a special ceremony at the city's airport. The event marked the 15th anniversary of the first airmail flight in the United States, which had taken off from a nearby airfield.
5. February 13, 1968, marked the opening of the New Mexico State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque. The fairgrounds have since become a major venue for events ranging from rodeos to concerts to trade shows.
