3. In 1997, North Carolina native Michael Jordan played in his first game in Charlotte since his retirement from the NBA in 1993. Jordan had recently returned to the league as a member of the Washington Wizards, but his homecoming was bittersweet as the Wizards lost to the Charlotte Hornets.

4. On February 13, 1914, the first meeting of the North Carolina Historical Commission was held in Raleigh. This commission was established to collect and preserve materials relating to the history of North Carolina, including manuscripts, maps, and rare books.

5. In 1983, North Carolina writer Reynolds Price won the William Faulkner Award for his novel "Kate Vaiden." Price, a Duke University professor, was known for his Southern Gothic writing style and his exploration of themes such as family, sexuality, and mortality.
