1. On February 14, 1912, New Mexico became the 47th state in the United States. After years of struggles, including a failed attempt at statehood in 1850, New Mexico finally achieved statehood after being granted Congress's approval. This marked an important event in the history of the state.

2. On February 14, 1943, the world's largest and deadliest train wreck occurred in New Mexico. The crash involved two trains carrying servicemen and their families, and it claimed the lives of 77 people. It remains the deadliest train disaster in U.S. history.

4. On February 14, 1973, the last prisoner of war from the Vietnam War, Air Force Colonel Robinson Risner, was released after more than seven years of captivity. Risner was born in Mammoth, Arizona, and had lived in New Mexico for a time before entering the Air Force. After his release, he wrote a book about his experiences entitled "The Passing of the Night: My Seven Years as a Prisoner of the North Vietnamese."

5. On February 14, 1983, New Mexico Senator Pete Domenici proposed the "Superconducting Supercollider" project, a massive particle accelerator that would have been located in Texas. The project was intended to be the largest scientific instrument ever built and would have been a major accomplishment for both New Mexico and the United States. However, funding issues and political opposition eventually led to the project's cancellation in 1993.
