1. The Nevada State Capitol was officially opened on February 16, 1871. The building is located in Carson City and is still in use today as the seat of government for the state of Nevada.

2. In 1937, the Hoover Dam, one of the largest and most celebrated engineering projects in American history, was completed on February 16. The dam was built on the border between Nevada and Arizona and provides water and electricity to millions of people in the Southwest.

3. Nevada was admitted to the Union as the 36th state on October 31, 1864. However, it wasn't until February 16, 1929, that the state flag was officially adopted. The flag features a blue background with a silver star and the words "Nevada" and "Battle Born" in yellow letters.

4. On February 16, 1908, the Reno Gazette-Journal newspaper was first published. The paper has been in continuous operation ever since and is one of the oldest and most respected newspapers in the state.

5. In 1942, the Nevada Test Site was established on February 16. The site, located in Nye County, was used for nuclear testing until 1992 and is now a National Historic Landmark. Today, visitors can tour the site and learn about the history of nuclear testing in Nevada.
