1. In 1890, the District of Columbia established the nation's first ambulance service. The service was initiated due to the large number of horse-drawn traffic accidents, as there were no cars yet in the city.

3. On February 18, 1942, the Japanese submarine I-17 shelled the Ellwood oil field near Santa Barbara, California. This was the first time the mainland United States was attacked in World War II.

4. In 2010, the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. added Michael Jackson's famous crystal-encrusted glove to its collection. The glove was worn by Jackson during the 1983 "Motown 25" television special where he performed his signature moonwalk dance move.

5. On February 18, 2014, the District of Columbia became the first jurisdiction in the United States to legalize marijuana for recreational use. The law allows individuals over the age of 21 to possess up to two ounces of marijuana and to grow up to six plants for personal use.
