1. In 1875, the Hawaiian government signed a treaty with the United States for reciprocal trade, which opened up exports of sugar and other goods to the U.S. market.

2. In 1943, the United States Army activated the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), a unit composed of Japanese American soldiers. The 442nd RCT went on to become one of the most decorated units of World War II, earning 18,143 individual decorations for valor.

3. In 1997, the Hawaiian island of Kahoolawe was returned to the State of Hawaii after being used for military training and bombing practice by the U.S. military for over 50 years. It is now a cultural reserve and restoration project.

4. In 2015, Hawaii became the first state in the United States to raise the legal smoking age to 21. The law aims to reduce smoking rates among young people.

5. In 2018, Hawaiian Airlines launched a new direct flight from Honolulu to Boston, Massachusetts, making it easier for travelers from the East Coast to visit Hawaii. The flights operate five times per week, and take around 11 hours.
