1. In 1803, the first map of Ohio was published. Created by John Matthews, the map presented a general view of the state's topography and major settlements.
2. On February 24, 1848, President James K. Polk signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, officially ending the Mexican-American War. The treaty established the Rio Grande as the southern border of Texas and ceded California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma to the United States.
3. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln promoted Ohio native William T. Sherman to the rank of Major General for his successful campaign in the Civil War.
4. On February 24, 1904, Johnny Weissmuller was born in Windber, Pennsylvania. He later became an Ohio State University swimmer and went on to win 5 Olympic gold medals and set 67 world records in swimming.
5. In 1968, the Beatles traveled to Athens, Ohio to visit their spiritual mentor, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The band members stayed at a house in the area and were able to relax and meditate in peace, away from the pressures of fame.
