1. In 1827, a new constitution was adopted in North Carolina, which created a new state senate that had more power than the House of Commons.

2. In 1909, the first North Carolina State Fair opened in Raleigh. It was held in October and featured livestock exhibitions, agricultural displays and other attractions.

3. In 1953, North Carolina became the first state in the country to establish a state-supported school of the arts. The school, located in Winston-Salem, focused on dance, drama, music, and other performing arts.

4. In 1963, the Raleigh-Durham International Airport opened. It was called the Durham County Airport until 1943, and then the Raleigh-Durham Airport until the name was changed to its current name.

5. In 1979, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival was founded in Durham. It became one of the premier documentary film festivals in the country, showcasing cutting edge documentaries from around the world.
