1. On February 3, 1852, Brigham Young, the governor of Utah and leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, established the city of Fillmore as the new capital of the Utah Territory. The previous capital, Salt Lake City, had proved to be too isolated and difficult to defend against potential Native American attacks.

2. In 1870, the United States Congress passed the Utah Territory Women's Suffrage Act, granting women the right to vote in Utah elections. This made Utah one of the first states or territories to grant women suffrage, several decades before the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution granted women's suffrage nationwide.

3. February 3, 1924, marked the opening of the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, a large convention center that hosted a variety of events over the years, from political conventions to sports competitions. In 1969, a new Salt Palace was built on the same site, and the original building was torn down.

4. On this day in 2002, the Winter Olympics began in Salt Lake City. This was the first time the Olympics had been held in the United States since the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The games were marred by scandals involving bribery and other improprieties in the bidding process, but they were also remembered for the success of American skiier Bode Miller, who won two silver medals.

5. February 3, 2012, saw the opening of the Natural History Museum of Utah in Salt Lake City, a state-of-the-art facility that explores the natural history and cultures of Utah and the surrounding region.
