4. In 1913, the first transatlantic telephone transmission was made from Arlington, Virginia to Paris, France, with a stop in South Harpswell, Maine. The transmission was the first step in the development of global telephone communication.
5. In 2005, Maine Senator Olympia Snowe was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People. Snowe was known for her moderate political positions and willingness to work across party lines.
