1. On February 6, 1788, Connecticut ratified the U.S. Constitution, becoming the fifth state to do so. This decision helped solidify the new federal government and shape the future of the United States.

2. In 1879, inventor Thomas Edison began testing his first practical electric incandescent lamp at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. Edison had ties to Connecticut, having previously worked at the Western Union telegraph office in Bridgeport.

3. February 6, 1900, marked the opening of the first public library in Hartford, Connecticut. The library was funded by a $50,000 donation from industrialist J.P. Morgan, and today it serves as the main branch of the Hartford Public Library system.

4. On February 6, 1926, Connecticut native and Olympian Walter Camp died in New York City at the age of 66. Camp is widely considered the "father of American football" for his extensive contributions to the rules and development of the sport.

5. In 1978, a blizzard struck Connecticut and much of the northeastern United States, dumping more than two feet of snow in some areas and causing widespread power outages and transportation disruptions. The storm, which lasted from February 5-7, resulted in 100 deaths and an estimated $520 million in damage.
