1. In 1778, the Battle of Fort Moultrie took place on Sullivan's Island. The British attempted to capture the fort, but it was defended by the American army led by Colonel William Moultrie.

3. In 1865, the 33rd United States Colored Troops Regiment participated in the Battle of Rivers' Bridge in Barnwell County. It was one of the largest engagements in South Carolina during the Civil War.

4. In 1960, the South Carolina Educational Television Network (ETV) was established. It was the first educational television network in the United States.

5. In 1991, Hurricane Hugo made landfall near Charleston as a Category 4 storm. It caused widespread damage and was one of the most destructive hurricanes in South Carolina's history.
