4. On February 7, 1908, the Great White Fleet arrived in Hampton Roads, Virginia after completing a 14-month, 43,000-mile circumnavigation of the globe. The fleet included 16 battleships and was a symbol of American naval power and projection of American influence abroad.

5. In 1926, African American aviator Bessie Coleman became the first person to receive an international pilot's license, which she earned in France. Coleman, who was born in Atlanta, Texas, lived in Maryland for a time before her death in a plane crash in 1926. She is remembered for breaking barriers in aviation and inspiring future generations of female pilots and African Americans.
