1. In 1867, the Nebraska territorial legislature authorized the establishment of a college for agriculture and the mechanical arts, which eventually became the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

2. In 1895, Omaha's first public library opened its doors to the public. The library was located on the corner of 18th and Harney Streets.

3. In 1943, the Nebraska state flag was officially adopted. The flag features the state seal surrounded by a gold and blue border.

4. In 1952, the Great Plains Art Collection was founded at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The collection features over 4,000 works of art by artists from Nebraska and the surrounding region.

5. In 1954, the Omaha newspaper, the Omaha World-Herald, became the first newspaper in the United States to publish a daily weather map. The map shows current conditions and forecasted weather for the entire state of Nebraska.
