2. In 1913, the first Kansas State University Extension Program was established. This program provides research-based educational programs and materials to help Kansans improve their quality of life.

3. In 1952, the first telephone cable ever laid across the Atlantic Ocean connected the United States and Europe. The cable landed at Rumford, Maine, but ran through Kansas, as the state was a major hub for long-distance telephone service at the time.

4. In 1987, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the New York Jets 35-15 in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. This was the Chiefs' first playoff win since 1971 and remains one of the most memorable games in team history.

5. In 2013, a record-breaking winter storm dubbed "Winter Storm Draco" brought heavy snowfall and widespread power outages to the Midwest, including Kansas. The storm resulted in at least 10 deaths and caused major damage to homes and businesses across the region.
