1. In 1864, the Battle of Spring Hill took place. It was a Civil War battle in which Confederate troops attempted to halt Union troops from advancing into the Shenandoah Valley. The Union was ultimately victorious, and the Confederates retreated.

2. On January 14, 1908, West Virginia Governor William E. Glasscock presented his State of the State address. In it, he discussed the importance of improving education and infrastructure in the state. He also praised the state's progress in mining and manufacturing.

3. In 1938, the West Virginia Legislature passed the Bituminous Coal Conservation Act. The Act established standards for mining and coal production in the state, aimed at reducing waste and improving safety. It was seen as a groundbreaking piece of legislation at the time.

4. On January 14, 1947, the West Virginia statehouse was destroyed by fire. The cause of the fire was never determined, but it was believed to have been started by faulty wiring. After the fire, a new statehouse was built on the same site.

5. In 1972, the West Virginia University men's basketball team defeated the University of Pittsburgh in a thrilling game. WVU guard Warren Baker hit a buzzer-beater shot to give his team a 78-77 victory. The game is still remembered as one of the greatest in WVU basketball history.
