1. In 2003, Montana Governor Judy Martz declared a state of emergency due to severe winter storms and avalanches that took place on January 16th and the following days. The storms caused power outages, transportation disruptions, and property damage.

2. On January 16, 1915, the Montana state legislature passed a bill that established Montana's first hospital for mental illness, the Montana State Hospital in Warm Springs. The hospital continues to provide mental health services to Montanans today.

3. On this day in 1942, a small plane crashed in the Missoula National Forest, killing all five of its passengers, which included U.S. Senator Burton K. Wheeler of Montana. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain a mystery, although it is believed that bad weather and mechanical problems contributed to the tragedy.

4. On January 16th, 1900, the town of Red Lodge experienced a devastating fire that destroyed most of its commercial district. Despite the destruction, the town was quickly rebuilt and today maintains its historic character, with many of its original buildings still standing.

5. In 2018, Montana made headlines when a 17-year-old high school student named Hailie Warren successfully defended her state wrestling title in the 152-pound weight class, becoming the first girl in Montana history to win a state wrestling championship against boys. Her feat inspired many and highlighted the growing popularity of girls' wrestling in the state.
