1. In 1893, the University of Wyoming officially opened its doors in Laramie. Originally known as Wyoming State University, it was the first institution of higher education in the state.
2. On January 17, 1867, the United States Congress approved the creation of the Territory of Wyoming. It became the first territory in the country to grant women the right to vote, serve on juries and hold public office.
3. In 1936, Union Pacific Railroad introduced the first Streamliner train to Wyoming, the "City of Denver". It reduced travel time between Omaha and Denver from 24 hours to just over 16 hours.
4. The Wyoming State Capitol Building in Cheyenne was completed on January 17, 1890. It was designed by architect David W. Gibbs and features a dome made of copper.
5. In 2012, a rare meteorite impact was discovered near Riverton, Wyoming. The 2,000-pound boulder is believed to be the second largest of its kind found in North America. It is estimated to be over 4 billion years old.
