1. On January 18, 1837, the state of Michigan was officially admitted to the United States as the 26th state. Prior to this, Michigan had been a part of the Indiana Territory and then the Michigan Territory.

2. In 1886, the first shipment of dried apples was sent from Buchanan, Michigan to Great Britain. This paved the way for Michigan's apple industry to become one of the largest in the world.

3. On January 18, 1967, a fire broke out at the Detroit Printing Co. in downtown Detroit. It was one of the largest fires in the city's history and caused over $7 million in damages.

4. The popular winter sports destination, Boyne Mountain Resort, officially opened on January 18, 1948. The resort is located in Boyne Falls, Michigan and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

5. On January 18, 2003, Michigan's University of Detroit Mercy celebrated its 125th anniversary. The private university was founded in 1877 and is Michigan's largest Roman Catholic university.
