1. On January 19, 1875, the Yule Marble was discovered in Marble, Colorado. This high-quality, pure-white marble would go on to be used in the construction of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.

2. Colorado's first official execution by hanging took place on January 19, 1887, in Leadville. James Reynolds was convicted of murdering his wife and was executed in front of a crowd of onlookers.

3. On January 19, 1915, the Colorado State Capitol building was completed. Designed in the neoclassical style, the building is easily recognizable with its gold dome and grand staircase.

4. The Colorado Avalanche played their first-ever game on January 19, 1995, at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver. They defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in front of a sold-out crowd.

5. On January 19, 2005, former Colorado governor Roy Romer was named the new superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District. He served in this position for six years before retiring.
