1. Wisconsin entered the United States as the 30th state on January 29, 1848. After years of fighting for statehood, Wisconsin finally gained admission to the Union following a series of negotiations and compromises.

2. On January 19, 1911, the Wisconsin Legislature passed the nation's first comprehensive workers' compensation law. The law provided injured workers with financial support for medical treatment, wages lost during the recovery period, and disability compensation.

3. The Wisconsin State Capitol building was completed on January 19, 1917. The capitol, which is located in downtown Madison, is one of the most impressive examples of neoclassical architecture in the United States.

4. In January 1974, Wisconsin Governor Patrick Lucey declared a state of emergency due to a blizzard that dropped nearly two feet of snow on the state. The emergency declaration allowed the National Guard to assist in the snow removal effort.

5. On January 19, 1991, Wisconsin's Donita Metzger made history by becoming the first woman to complete an NFL tryout as a placekicker. Metzger kicked a 35-yard field goal and two extra points during the tryout with the Green Bay Packers. Although she didn't ultimately make the team, she paved the way for future female athletes in the sport.
