1. In 1826, the town of Fryeburg in western Maine was incorporated. Today, it is known for its annual Fryeburg Fair, which is one of the oldest agricultural fairs in the country.

2. January 21, 1894 marks the birth of Hayes Alan Jenkins, who was born in Lewiston, Maine. He later became a figure skating champion, winning four consecutive U.S. championships and two world championships in the 1950s.

3. In 1911, a train derailment occurred in Waterville, Maine. The accident resulted in the death of four people and injuries to more than a dozen others.

4. On January 21, 1927, the Maine Legislature approved a bill to make Portland the first city in Maine to have an airfield. The airfield was located in what is now the Scarborough Marsh, and it was used for both commercial and military purposes.

5. In 1968, the Brunswick Naval Air Station was commissioned in Brunswick, Maine. The base was used for both training and operational purposes, and it was home to a number of squadrons over the years. The base was closed in 2011 as part of a nationwide base realignment and closure process.
