1) On January 21, 1907, Oklahoma officially became the 46th state in the United States. The state was formed out of the Indian Territory and the Oklahoma Territory, and had a population of over 1.4 million people at the time of statehood.
2) In 1921, on January 21st, the City of Tulsa was rocked by racial violence known as the Tulsa Race Massacre. Over two days, white mobs attacked the thriving African American neighborhood of Greenwood, killing as many as 300 people and destroying over 35 blocks of homes and businesses.
3) January 21, 1930, marked the dedication of the Tidal Wave Bridge in Tulsa, which spanned the Arkansas River and was the longest concrete arch bridge in the world at the time. The bridge was renamed the Cyrus Avery Route 66 Memorial Bridge in 2004 in honor of the man who championed the creation of the famous highway.
4) The Oklahoma Sooners men's basketball team made history on January 21, 1989, when they defeated the North Texas Mean Green 140-82, setting a new NCAA record for most points scored in a game at the time. The record has since been broken.
5) On January 21, 2009, Governor Brad Henry issued a posthumous pardon for a man named Roy Belton, who had been executed in 1949 for murder. It was the first posthumous pardon in Oklahoma history, and was based on new evidence that suggested Belton may have been innocent.
