1. In 1933, South Carolina was hit by a severe ice storm that caused widespread damage and power outages. The storm, which began on January 21st and lasted for several days, coated trees and power lines with up to two inches of ice, causing them to snap and fall. The state's governor declared a state of emergency and the National Guard was called in to assist with recovery efforts.

2. On January 21, 1861, South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union. The state's secession convention, which had been meeting since December, adopted an Ordinance of Secession that declared the state's independence from the United States. This event was a major catalyst for the start of the American Civil War.

3. In 1983, the South Carolina State House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The State House, which is located in Columbia, was completed in 1907 and is regarded as one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States. It is also the only state house in the country to have its own subway system, which transports legislators between the State House and nearby office buildings.

4. On January 21, 1915, the Charleston Museum was founded, making it the first museum in the United States to be established in a municipal building. The museum, which is located in Charleston, is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of South Carolina's natural and cultural history. Its collections include more than 500,000 archaeological artifacts, fine and decorative arts, and natural history specimens.

5. In 1977, South Carolina State University's men's basketball team defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore 105-72, setting a new NCAA record for the most points scored in a single game. The team's star player, Ronnie Hightower, scored 46 points in the game, including 20 in the first 12 minutes. The record still stands today and has only been tied once, by Loyola Marymount University in 1991.
