1. In 1896, Utah officially became the 45th state in the United States. This occurred after years of controversy surrounding the predominant religion in the state at the time, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, after the church renounced polygamy and other controversial practices, Utah was finally granted statehood.

2. In 1985, the Sundance Film Festival had its first run in Utah. The festival was founded by Robert Redford and has since grown to become one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. It is held annually in Park City, Utah and showcases some of the best independent films from around the world.

3. In 1950, a plane carrying 52 people crashed into the Wasatch Mountains near Salt Lake City, Utah. All of the passengers and crew were killed in the crash, making it one of the deadliest plane crashes in the state's history. The cause of the crash was determined to be due to poor weather conditions.

4. In 1861, the Utah Territory declared martial law in response to the outbreak of the American Civil War. The move was made to prevent any pro-Confederate sympathizers in the territory from causing trouble. Although Utah was never officially involved in the Civil War, the territory's leaders continued to monitor the situation closely.

5. In 1894, the first electric streetcar began operation in Salt Lake City, Utah. The streetcar ran along Main Street and connected downtown Salt Lake City with the nearby Sugar House neighborhood. The streetcar was a major technological advancement at the time and helped to shape the transportation landscape of Utah's capital city for years to come.
