1. On January 22, 1900, the first known auto show was held in Detroit, Michigan. The event displayed 17 vehicles, including a steam-powered car called the Locomobile, and drew nearly 200 visitors.

2. In 1939, the "Speed King" Malcolm Campbell set a new land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, driving a car powered by a supercharged Cadillac V-16 engine. The car had been designed and built by Duesenberg Brothers in Detroit, Michigan.

3. January 22, 1943 marked the opening of Michigan's first all-African American hospital, the Homer G. Phillips Hospital in Detroit. The facility served the black community until it closed in 1979.

4. On this day in 1963, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a speech at Cobo Hall in Detroit, Michigan. The speech, known as "The American Dream," addressed issues of poverty, inequality, and racism in America.

5. On January 22, 1987, the Detroit Pistons' Isaiah Thomas scored a career-high 47 points in a game against the Washington Bullets. The Pistons went on to win the game 120-112.
