1. On January 22, 1901, the Missouri State Capitol building was destroyed by a fire. The blaze started in the House of Representatives chamber and quickly spread throughout the building, causing extensive damage. The cause of the fire was never determined, but it resulted in the complete reconstruction of the Capitol building.
2. The Missouri State Archives was established on January 22, 1965. Located in Jefferson City, the Archives preserves and provides access to historical records and documents related to Missouri's government, culture, and people.
3. On January 22, 1879, the first Kansas City Public Library opened its doors. The library was housed in a small room in the city's Board of Education building, but it quickly outgrew its space. Today, the Kansas City Public Library system includes 10 branches and serves over 250,000 residents.
4. On January 22, 1861, Missouri Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson signed an ordinance of secession, which declared Missouri's allegiance to the Confederacy during the Civil War. Although the state never fully seceded, it was divided in its loyalties and saw significant conflict throughout the war.
5. The famed outlaw Jesse James was born in Missouri on January 22, 1847. James is known for his role in a series of notorious bank and train robberies, and his gang became one of the most feared in the American West. James was eventually killed by a member of his own gang in 1882.
