1. In 1907, the Tonopah and Goldfield Railroad officially opened for service. This railroad connected the mining towns of Tonopah and Goldfield and played a crucial role in the transportation of people and goods in the early 20th century.
2. On January 22, 1935, the Hoover Dam was formally dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The dam had been under construction since 1930 and was a monumental engineering achievement that provided electricity and irrigation for millions of people in the Southwest.
3. In 1954, Las Vegas hosted the first Miss Universe pageant held in the United States. The event was held at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium and attracted contestants from around the world. Miss USA, Miriam Stevenson, was crowned the winner.
4. The Tropicana Las Vegas hotel and casino opened its doors on January 22, 1957. It was originally named the Tropicana Country Club and was one of the first hotel-casinos on the Las Vegas Strip. Today, it is still a popular destination for visitors.
5. In 2002, the Winter Olympics torch relay passed through Nevada on its way to Salt Lake City, Utah. The torch traveled through Las Vegas, Carson City, and Reno, and was carried by a diverse group of runners, including Olympic gold medalists and local dignitaries.
